WHAT A BLAST: 6 DAYS IN LA by Kerri Doherty
DAY 2: THE SHOOT (AND HOW MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER MADE MY MOM’S DAY)
At 5AM I found myself wide awake and mindlessly staring up at the ceiling. My stomach grumbled, and though I’m pretty sure it was just gas, the moment was reminiscent of the butterflies that would bounce around in my 5 year-old tummy on Christmas morning, or any time my parents brought home a new cat, which I’d pet too hard before hyperventilating and passing out from all of the excitement.
Because I spend most days holed up writing in Park Slope coffee shops like some hermitic recluse, it was nice to interact with humans in a creative capacity for a change. It had been a few years since I last wrote and directed a fun project like this, and I. Was. Amped.
I’m not going to reveal too many details about the video right now, but I will say that it is the first episode of a half-real, half-scripted interview series in the vein of The Chris Farley Show or Between Two Ferns, and that it stars myself and spectacular actor/director/photographer/editor/painter/wearer of mismatched socks, Matthew Gray Gubler. I’m so incredibly happy and thankful that he worked with us on this project. We improvised a ton, and spent most of the day laughing and talking about our mutual love for Portlandia and Steve Buscemi. I really hope we get to work together again someday. During a few minutes of down time I asked Matthew if he’d say hi to my mom on the phone. She’s a huge fan of Criminal Minds and loves him almost as much as she loves his co-star, walking shirtless photo op Shemar Moore. He happily took the phone and let her geek out with him for a few minutes. What a stellar dude, guys (and Kudos to his fantastically dedicated fans who were able to track down my production stills. Though I wasn’t quite ready to share them on the Interwebs, I do applaud their super sleuth abilities!).
